Which motorsport race should you go to first? F1, MotoGP, Le Mans, Formula E or the Indy 500

16 min read

Pick the series by the kind of weekend you want, not by which one is "best". Formula 1 gives you the biggest spectacle, MotoGP the closest racing, Le Mans a 24-hour festival, Formula E an easy, short race day and the Indy 500 sheer scale and tradition. If you live in the UK or Europe, the simplest start is the nearest flagship event you can reach without a long-haul flight.

PitLane Travel sells no tickets or packages (about us), so we can tell you plainly when a series isn't right for you. Here's how to choose.

The quick answer: match the series to the weekend you want

All dates below were checked against official sources on 31 Oct 2026. Calendars can change, so confirm on the official site before you book. The "pick it if" column is our editorial judgement.

Cost: what drives it

We don't quote all-in trip prices, because they depend on your dates, where you travel from and how far ahead you book. Three things drive the bill:

  • Tickets. Grandstand seats cost much more than general admission. Racing Atlas, a comparison site, describes MotoGP general admission as generally better value than F1 [18]. In our judgement, Formula E is usually the lowest-commitment ticket of the five, with F1 at the top end.
  • Accommodation. Hotels near circuits charge race-week rates, and the closest ones sell out early. Camping (Le Mans, Silverstone, many MotoGP rounds) is often the cheaper option.
  • Travel. A domestic or short-haul trip (Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Le Mans) is far cheaper than a long-haul one (Indianapolis). Rural circuits can add car hire or shuttle costs.

Getting there and staying

City venues are the easy option: you fly or take the train in, stay in a normal hotel and walk or take public transport to the track. The F1 and Formula E races in Monaco are the classic example. Rural circuits (Silverstone, Le Mans, Mugello, Indianapolis) mean planning around traffic, shuttles or camping. Note that the London E-Prix is no longer a city-centre race. From the 2026–27 season it moves from ExCeL to Brands Hatch in Kent [13]. See PitLane transport for getting to each circuit. For European rounds you can reach by rail or coach, such as Le Mans via Paris, compare times and fares on Omio (affiliate).

Formula 1: pick it for the biggest spectacle

Who it suits: anyone who already watches F1, wants the full show and doesn't mind crowds.

An F1 weekend is three days of track action plus support races, fan zones and concerts. The cars are the fastest of the five series, and the crowds are the biggest. The downsides: tickets and hotels are the most expensive here, the cars pass quickly at most viewpoints, and without a screen or the live timing app it's hard to tell who's leading.

A good first F1 race for UK and European readers: the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, 2–4 July 2027 [1][2][3]. It's domestic for UK readers, and in 2027 it's a Sprint weekend [2], so Saturday has a race too. Expect heavy traffic. See the British Grand Prix race page and Silverstone grandstands.

If you want the glamour trip: the Monaco Grand Prix runs 4–6 June 2027, with the race on Sunday 6 June, and it hosts a Sprint for the first time [2][3]. It's a city break, but seats and hotels are at the top of the market, and overtaking is rare on the narrow streets. Monaco makes a better bucket-list trip than a first sampler. See the Monaco Grand Prix race page and Monaco grandstands.

More on the series: F1 hub.

MotoGP: pick it for the closest racing

Who it suits: fans who want overtaking they can see, and F1 fans curious about something different.

Live, MotoGP shows you what TV can't: riders hanging off the bike, wrestling it under braking and running side by side through corners. Positions change on track, so it's easier to follow without a screen. Racing Atlas notes that MotoGP general admission is generally better value than F1's [18]. The downsides: it's as loud and long a day as F1, and the most atmospheric rounds are at countryside circuits.

First picks:

  • Mugello, Italy, 28–30 May 2027 [5]. It's the Italian Grand Prix in the Tuscan hills and the round with the strongest atmosphere, in our judgement. The circuit reports a record 178,723 spectators over the 2026 race weekend [5]. See the Mugello race page.
  • Silverstone, 13–15 August 2027 [6]. This is the British Grand Prix, and for UK readers it's the low-effort option. See the MotoGP British GP race page.

More on the series: MotoGP hub.

Le Mans 24 Hours (WEC): pick it for a once-in-a-lifetime festival

Is Le Mans a good first race? Yes, if you want an experience more than a race. Le Mans runs for 24 hours across a day and a night, with a big camping crowd and a festival feel. It is a lot for a newcomer, so plan to watch the start, dusk and sunrise from different corners rather than staying awake for all 24 hours. If you'd rather have a short, simple first weekend, start with an F1, MotoGP or Formula E round and save Le Mans for your second trip.

2027: the 95th 24 Hours of Le Mans is the fifth round of the 2027 World Endurance Championship. The event runs 9–13 June 2027 [7], with a test day on 6 June [10]. The race itself starts on Saturday 12 June and finishes on Sunday 13 June. The official race schedule lists the start of the 95th edition at 16:00 [8][9].

What makes it different: several classes of car share the track at once (Hypercar, LMP2 and LMGT3 [9]), so the leaders lap slower cars all race. That's thrilling, but you'll want the official app to follow it. The campsites are part of the culture. The downsides: it's tiring, the race is hard to read without an app, and nearby hotels are scarce, so book or camp early.

See the Le Mans race page and the WEC hub.

Formula E: pick it for an easy, low-commitment race day

Is Formula E worth going to instead of F1? Yes, if you want a short, simple and family-friendly first race. No, if you want noise and prestige. The electric cars are quiet, so you can talk at the fence and bring children. Each race is compressed into a single day, and the tickets are generally positioned at the lower end of the market (our judgement; we have no sourced price comparison).

2027 first picks:

  • London E-Prix, Brands Hatch, Kent, 29–30 May 2027 [11][12][13]. This is a change. The London race moves from ExCeL in east London to the full Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch, about 30 minutes outside London [11][13]. It's a double-header: a classic E-Prix and a new shorter race format called the E-PrixUnleashed [13]. So the trade-off has shifted. You get a proper permanent circuit, but it's no longer a city-centre day out. See the London E-Prix race page.
  • Monaco E-Prix, 1–2 May 2027 [11][12]. It runs on the same streets as the F1 race but with lower demand, and it's a straightforward city break. See the Monaco E-Prix race page.

The downsides: less noise, less prestige, and a shorter day than an F1 or MotoGP weekend. More on the series: Formula E hub.

IndyCar and the Indy 500: pick it for the pilgrimage

Is the Indy 500 worth travelling to from the UK or Europe? If you want one enormous, historic race day and you're happy to fly long-haul, yes. If you want the easiest or cheapest first race, no: a European round is far simpler.

2027: the 111th Indianapolis 500 is on Sunday 30 May 2027 [15][16]. The build-up includes Carb Day (Friday 28 May) and Legends Day (Saturday 29 May) [16]. You can watch from reserved grandstand seats or from the general admission mounds in the infield [15]. The scale and traditions are the point, and on an oval you see much of the lap from one seat. The downsides: it's a long-haul trip for a single day, hotels in Indianapolis fill up for race weekend, and late May in Indiana can be hot.

An easier IndyCar first: the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, a street race on 16–18 April 2027 [17]. The organisers list ticket prices from $59 (Friday general admission) to $232 (a three-day ticket with weekend reserved grandstand seating) (official figures, checked 31 Oct 2026) [17]. Children aged 12 and under get in free with a ticketed adult, though they need a Junior ticket to sit in the grandstands [17]. See the Long Beach race page, the Indy 500 race page and the IndyCar hub.

Which first race suits you?

These picks are our editorial judgement.

  • First-timer on a budget: MotoGP at Silverstone, or Formula E at Brands Hatch if you're in the UK. Both are general admission, domestic travel, and you can camp or day-trip.
  • With kids: Formula E. It's quieter, the day is shorter and it's easy to leave early.
  • With a partner who isn't a fan: Monaco (F1 or Formula E). The city is the attraction even when the cars aren't on track.
  • A group of mates: Le Mans or the British Grand Prix, both with campsites.
  • MotoGP-curious F1 fan: Mugello. It's the clearest contrast with what you already know.
  • One big bucket-list trip: the Indy 500 or Le Mans. Pick Indy for one huge day, Le Mans for a week-long festival.

Two series, one trip in 2027

Late May and early June 2027 are crowded. On the weekend of 29–30 May, the Indy 500 (30 May) [15], MotoGP at Mugello (28–30 May) [5] and Formula E at Brands Hatch (29–30 May) [13] all clash, so you can only pick one of them. The clashes also open up some combinations (our judgement, not tested itineraries):

  • Monaco F1 (4–6 June) + Le Mans (9–13 June) [2][7]. They fall in consecutive weeks and are both reachable by rail in France.
  • Formula E at Brands Hatch (29–30 May) + Monaco F1 (4–6 June) [2][13]. It's electric then F1, a week apart.
  • F1 in Canada (21–23 May) + the Indy 500 (30 May) [2][15]. It's one long-haul trip with two races in consecutive weeks.

For every 2027 pairing and clash, see Two Races, One Trip: Best Cross-Series Pairings for 2027.

Before you go

  • Mobile data. You'll want data for live timing and the official event app, so if your first race is abroad, check your roaming allowance, or, if your phone supports eSIM, set one up from a provider such as Airalo (affiliate) before you leave.
  • Packing. Pack for a long day outdoors in any weather, whichever series you pick. If your first race is F1 and you want team kit, the F1 Store (affiliate) sells official merchandise.

How to plan it yourself with PitLane

  1. Pick dates on the race calendar or the race map.
  2. Compare events side by side in the compare tool.
  3. Open the race page for ticket links, grandstand guides and the handoff to flights and hotels.

We don't sell tickets. Buy from the official ticket office for each event. If you'd rather not plan it yourself, see packages, and weigh the convenience against doing it yourself.

FAQ

Which motorsport race should I go to first? Pick the series by the weekend you want rather than by which is "best". Choose Formula 1 for the biggest spectacle and a three-day event, MotoGP for the closest racing and visible rider skill, the 24 Hours of Le Mans for a once-in-a-lifetime camping-and-night-racing festival, Formula E for an easy, family-friendly race day, and the Indy 500 for sheer scale and tradition. For most first-timers in the UK and Europe, the simplest start is the nearest flagship event they can reach without a long-haul flight.

Is F1 or MotoGP better to watch live? Neither is better; they're different days out. F1 gives you the fastest cars, the loudest atmosphere and the biggest crowds. MotoGP usually gives you more overtaking and closer battles, you can see the riders working the bike, and general admission is generally better value than at an F1 Grand Prix, according to Racing Atlas [18]. If you've only watched F1 on TV, MotoGP live is often the bigger surprise.

Is Le Mans a good first race? Yes, if you want an experience more than a race: Le Mans runs for 24 hours across a day and a night, with a big camping crowd and a festival feel. It is a lot for a newcomer, so plan to watch the start, dusk and sunrise from different corners rather than staying awake for all 24 hours. If you'd rather have a short, simple first weekend, start with an F1, MotoGP or Formula E round and save Le Mans for your second trip.

Is Formula E worth going to instead of F1? Yes, if you want a short, quiet and family-friendly first race at a lower commitment. No, if noise and prestige matter to you. Note that the 2027 London E-Prix is at Brands Hatch in Kent, not in central London [13].

Is the Indy 500 worth travelling to from the UK or Europe? Yes, if you want one huge, historic race day and are happy to fly long-haul for it. If you want the easiest first race, start in Europe and save Indy for later. The 2027 race is on Sunday 30 May [15].

Which is the cheapest series to see live? Travel and hotels matter more than tickets. Formula E and MotoGP general admission tend to be the lower-cost options, with F1 at the top (our judgement; Racing Atlas on MotoGP [18]). A domestic event you can day-trip or camp at almost always costs less than a long-haul trip.

Can I see two different series on one trip in 2027? Yes. Monaco F1 (4–6 June) and Le Mans (9–13 June) fall in consecutive weeks [2][7], and the F1 Canadian Grand Prix (21–23 May) is the weekend before the Indy 500 (30 May) [2][15]. The 29–30 May weekend is a clash (the Indy 500, Mugello and Formula E at Brands Hatch), so you can only pick one of those.
